PFD application deadline looms - KTNA 88.9FM
March 31 marks the deadline for Alaskans to file for their 2010 Permanent Fund Dividend. The state Department of Revenue expects that they will receive 50,000 more applications online in the closing week of the filing period.The PFD division alerts Macintosh computer users that they won't be able to process their 2010 PFD application if they use web browser Safari. The division recommends Mac users to switch to the application Firefox.

Nonprofits around the state are tallying their contributions from the new PFD check-off program. It’s the Pick-Click-Give campaign, which brought in $550,000 statewide. The Food Bank of Alaska took in the most money from the program, more than $28,000. Alaska Public Telecommunications, which runs APRN, KSKA and KAKM will receive $19,000 dollars.

First-day PFD filings are way up

PICK, CLICK, GIVE: Applicants can spread the wealth to 333 charities.

What were you doing at midnight on New Year's Eve?

Dancing? Drinking? Toasting and getting kissed?

Then you were not among the hundreds of Alaskans who chose to welcome 2009 with fingers poised over a computer keyboard, eager to apply for the 2009 Permanent Fund dividend.

The application period opened at 12:01 a.m. Thursday and closes March 31.

In the first hour after midnight last year, 807 people filed online applications, according to Deborah Bitney, director of the Permanent Fund Dividend Division. By 2 p.m. last Jan. 1, 10,000 had applied.

But this year's numbers crushed that.

As of 2:47 p.m. Thursday, the count at the PFD Web site was 18,634.

By 6:14 p.m., it had ballooned to 26,772.

Backers hope a new charitable-giving program will help Alaska service groups hit hard by the nation’s economic downturn. But its proceeds will not make it into nonprofit groups’ coffers until later next year. The "Pick. Click. Give." program stems from legislation introduced by a Southeast lawmaker.
