About Us
The mission of 49 Writers, Inc. is to support the artistic development of writers throughout Alaska, foster a writing community, and build an audience for literature.

Established as a nonprofit in 2010, 49 Writers envisions a vibrant community of Alaskan writers coming together to inspire, create, and share. To that end, our programs and activities focus on supporting the development of writers across the state while promoting awareness of their work and appreciation of literature in general. Since 2008 we have also maintained a popular blog for writers and readers.

How Pick.Click.Give. makes a difference
49 Writers provides creative writing workshops to writers at all stages who want to improve their craft and become part of a literary community. We also organize author events that connect Alaskan writers with their readers and provide the community with opportunities to engage with favorite authors. Pick.Click.Give donations enable us to continue this work and to expand our programming across Alaska.

We collaborate with an extensive network of partners across Alaska to provide the following services, and rely on a dedicated team of 35 volunteers to assist with all aspects of our operations:

Writing instruction: Affordable classes for writers of all ages that cover the various aspects of craft and the writing life, from half-day workshops to six-week series, taught by faculty who include award-winning visiting writers as well as Alaskan authors with a reputation for teaching excellence. In 2015 we held classes in Anchorage, Barrow, Juneau, Haines, Homer, Kodiak, and Palmer.

Information and resources: Our collaborative blog connects the literary community and serves as an online platform for the exchange of information and discussion of ideas. Last year 135 writers provided content on topics ranging from Wild Writing Residencies to Scott Fitzgerald’s Recipe for First-Time Novel Success.

Community literary events: Our Reading & Craft Talk series features authors with recently-published books who read from and delve into the creation of their work. Crosscurrents on-stage conversations between an established author and a local writer (because books aren’t just for reading) provide insight into the writing life and its processes. We have also organized author panels, literary salons where writers gather and share their work, author weekends in rural communities, a spring Write-a-thon, and Alaska Book Week, held in October as a celebration of Alaskan writers and their work.

Contributed support from individuals, including through Pick.Click.Give, accounts for more than one third of our income and allows 49 Writers to respond quickly and creatively to opportunities to strengthen and expand our programming.
