Alaska Legal Services Corporation

About Us

For over 50 years, ALSC has provided free civil legal services to low-income and disadvantaged people and communities to protect their safety, their health, and promote family stability. ALSC specializes in providing legal help to the most vulnerable of Alaska’s residents including: veterans, abused children, domestic violence victims, seniors, the disabled, individuals experiencing mental and physical health issues, and those facing homelessness. Legal services range from advice and counseling, assistance with do-it-yourself representation, to full representation in court and administrative hearings.

With 12 statewide offices and 6 medical-legal partnership sites, ALSC is the only provider of free, comprehensive civil legal aid in Alaska. To expand our reach in the state, ALSC’s award winning pro bono program utilizes lawyers who donate their time and expertise in cases, special projects, clinics, day of service events, and by creating self-help resources for clients. In the past year, ALSC's services impacted over 7,380 individuals and their families living in 188 Alaska communities.

How Pick.Click.Give. makes a difference

Your Pick.Click.Give. donation will be put to work immediately to ensure Alaskans across the state who walk through ALSC’s doors are empowered to confront distressing civil legal situations. Here are a few examples of the important work that you make possible when you Pick.Click.Give. to ALSC:

Elizabeth is an elderly domestic violence victim living in a small remote village. Her domestic violence injuries became so bad that Elizabeth had to travel to get medical attention. When Elizabeth’s injuries became apparent to her doctor, she was referred to an ALSC attorney located at the hospital through a medical-legal partnership. The attorney helped Elizabeth secure an order of protection from her abuser, and also helped Elizabeth with other legal needs including an estate case and executing a will. With the protective order in place, Elizabeth was able to safely return to her home in the village.

David, a single father of four children, was devastated when he received an eviction notice. With no other immediate housing alternatives, the eviction would force David and his children into homelessness. Then David found hope at ALSC. An attorney was able to intervene and helped David postpone his eviction for several months while he searched for alternative housing. The eviction extension helped David find a new home to live in, allowing him and his family to avoid homelessness completely.

When Kelly was diagnosed with a severe respiratory impairment, it complicated her entire life. Kelly’s doctor told her that she needed new housing and could no longer take public transit due to the health risks. With the help of an ALSC attorney, Kelly was able to quickly locate handicapped accessible rental housing that fit her needs. The attorney also helped Kelly secure transportation through a service for those whose physical, cognitive or sensory disabilities prevent them from using the fixed route public bus system. Kelly now has safe housing and transportation that meet her unique needs.

These are just several examples of the ways that lives are being changed by ALSC each and every day. When you invest in ALSC, you are ensuring Alaskans in need are not standing alone when navigating the justice system. Together, we can bridge the justice gap in our state and provide access to justice for all, not just those who can afford it.
