Doyon Foundation's mission is to provide educational, career and cultural opportunities to enhance the identity and quality of life for Doyon, Limited shareholders and their children. Since inception in 1989, the Foundation has worked toward that mission by awarding scholarships, connecting students with education and career information, providing support through events, outreach and alumni relationships, and leading cultural efforts, such as the Native language revitalization program.
How Pick.Click.Give. makes a difference
Since the Foundation was established in 1989, we have awarded more than $6 million in scholarships to thousands of high school, vocational and college students pursuing their educational goals and striving to achieve their life dreams. Many of these students have shared that they simply would not have been able to attend college without the support of the Foundation. Yet with that support, they have gone on to become doctors, lawyers, teachers and leaders in our communities, setting positive examples for future generations of students to follow.
But the support of the Foundation is more than just financial. Homesick students far from family have found comfort in the support of Foundation staff and alumni, and at events designed to celebrate and connect students and Foundation supporters. The Foundation has also helped students develop a deeper connection with and pride in their rich Native culture.
In addition to scholarships, the Foundation also places emphasis on celebrating and revitalizing Native culture. Through its language revitalization program, and Doyon Languages Online project, the Foundation is currently developing hundreds of online language-learning lessons for nine of the 10 Doyon region languages.
This effort is critically needed because, due to the rapidly decreasing number of fluent speakers, Native languages within the Doyon region are not being passed on quickly enough to ensure their survival, creating an urgent need to promote and foster language opportunities for non-speakers. Thanks to the efforts of the language revitalization program, Doyon Languages Online, and passionate, dedicated speakers and learners, the tides are beginning to turn for Doyon region languages, which represent half of Alaska’s 20 Native languages.
Funds from Pick.Click.Give. directly benefit student scholarships and support programs, as well as the efforts of the language revitalization program.
