Empowering children in need to make choices for healthy, safe and active lifestyles. The Basics and it's shoe recycling program, Kicks for Kids, provides needed gym shoes, athletic shoes and winter boots for children in need. These children then avoid the stigma of being singled out and standing in line to sift through a lost and found box in an attempt to find appropriate footwear for participation in gym and athletic/recreational activities.
How Pick.Click.Give. makes a difference
The Basics and it's shoe recycling program, Kicks for Kids, has provided over 5000 pairs of gym, athletic/recreational shoes and winter boots for children in need since the fall of 2012. The Basics and the Kicks for Kids recycle program are now serving the Anchorage, Kenai and Fairbanks school districts with the goal to expand statewide in Alaska. The Basics believes in "paying it forward" to children in need. The ability to participate in sports programs with the appropriate gear allows opportunities for students to excel in sports potentially earning scholarships for a higher education. They are then able to return to their communities as positive role models and contributors. Testimonials from coaches, staff, parents and students are heartwarming. Children in need cannot access gym, sports and recreation programs if they do not have the proper gear, although students have joined after school running programs with sandals or shoes torn and falling off their feet. Sports and active participation in gym and recreation programs fulfills the need for physical activity resulting in healthier children.
