The Sled Dog Sanctuary strives to be a place where sled dogs can work, play and thrive while healing from a past life of abuse, illness or neglect.
We provide sled dogs the opportunity to learn, grow and evolve without the pressure of succeeding under a time line. It is our goal to build each dog up to their individual potential while throwing out the mold of what many believe a sled dog should fit into.
We actively work through the global community encouraging adoption through a compatible match of a sled dog's personality with those of their adopters, making connections and adoptions not only in Alaska but in many of the lower 48 states.
It is also our goal to work with groups throughout the state of Alaska providing a sanctuary to people in need of a quiet place to heal, with animal therapy close at hand.
Along with providing animal therapy, we strive to expand the knowledge about our wonderful sport by offering hands on education to our visitors, providing facts and demonstrating the use of mushing equipment to further illustrate the complexities that exist within a dog team.
It is our goal to not only provide a haven for sled dogs in need but to provide education, therapy and adoption services to all who come to the Sled Dog Sanctuary.
How Pick.Click.Give. makes a difference
Pick. Click. Give. means the world to the sled dogs we work with here at the Sanctuary. When a sled dog enters our facility they are first evaluated on their rehabilitation needs, their character and most importantly, their health.
Most often the dogs we receive are in bad shape and require veterinary attention as well as a high calorie diet to put on a healthy weight. For others it takes a whole lot of time, love and attention to reach a place of healing.
With each dog there is a unique amount of time and money spent on each animal. Some will require more time while others require more funding (multiple veterinary visits, high calorie food, etc) to set them firmly on the path to health and happiness.
Every dollar raised through Pick. Click. Give. not only helps us restore health and hope in each sled dog's life but it also allows us to continue our outreach programs to help the physically and mentally disabled as well as veterans in need of a unique form of animal therapy.
Everything we do at the Sanctuary revolves around the dogs. Over the years as we have worked with special needs groups we have noticed that not only are the people receiving healing therapy but our sled dogs in rehabilitation are getting a type of much needed human therapy as well.
Many of the sled dogs who enter the Sanctuary come from abusive or neglectful pasts but through interaction with others in our community by socializing and giving treats each dog comes to know that humans can be a source of happiness and love.
