When police or child protective services believe a child is being abused, the child is brought to the CAC—a safe, child-focused environment—by a caregiver or other “safe” adult. At the CAC, the child tells their story once to a trained interviewer who knows the right questions to ask in a way that does not retraumatize the child.
How Pick.Click.Give. makes a difference
The Childrens Place is a child advocacy center and is part of the only multi-disciplinary team in the Mat-Su area that addresses reports of child sexual abuse, physical abuse and other forms of child maltreatment. When there is a report of harm to a child, the child and his or her protective caregiver come to The Childrens Place for a comprehensive evaluation, including: a child-friendly and legally-sound forensic interview; a specialized and non-traumatic medical exam; referral and linkage to appropriate mental health services for the child and family; ongoing support and resource referral throughout the evaluation and investigation process. Our multi-disciplinary team is comprised of professionals representing victim advocacy, medical and mental health providers, law enforcement, child protection, criminal and civil state attorneys, and youth probation. The Childrens Place is a safe and comfortable, child-friendly, neutral facility where the child and protective caregiver come to receive an evaluation and begin the investigation process. Funding sources are federal, state and local grants; earned revenue and contributions from community businesses and individuals. Contributions received through the Pick.Click.Give. program are used to support services for children and families that are seen at The Childrens Place.
