About Us
Healthy Futures - the signature program of the Alaska Sports Hall of Fame - is a statewide initiative working to empower Alaska’s youth to build the habit of daily physical activity.
How Pick.Click.Give. makes a difference
Leading Alaskan health officials identify obesity as the predominant public health threat of our lifetime expecting it to overtake tobacco as the leading cause of death. Alaska's obesity-related Medicaid costs are expected to be $684 million annually by 2030 if rates continue as predicted.
In Alaska 26% of Alaska high school students are overweight or obese and 36% of K-12th graders in the Anchorage School District are overweight or obese.
Increased physical activity is a recommended component of a collaborative approach to fighting childhood obesity. In addition, physical activity is the leading prescription for the reduction of obesity thus decreasing the chances of hypertension and diabetes, two of the leading causes of kidney disease.
Healthy Futures is committed to leading the way by empowering youth to build the habit of daily physical activity. The program provides two core programs, the Healthy Futures Challenge (in which children are rewarded for completing activity logs) and increasing youth attendance at community recreational events.
Healthy Futures places a priority on health inequity by working to make it easier for underserved children to attend community events by providing benefits including the coverage of event entry fees, bus services to events from schools with high poverty rates, and an after school program at a Title 1 school each year.
Your support through the Pick.Click.Give. program will help to cover the costs of running a program that works with over 200 schools and 20,000 children around the state and also provides support to over 115 community events.
Together we can build a healthier future for Alaska and its people!
