About Us
The mission of the AARC is to vigorously promote, support, and lead amateur radio activities in a manner that honors and exemplifies the radio amateur's code, builds esprit de corps within our membership, and serves our community's needs.
We sponsor the Radio Science & Operations Center (RSOC) where we maintain and operate equipment ready for emergencies, train operators and youth on electronic and radio principles, store mobile equipment, build and test systems, and render amateur radio license examinations on behalf of the FCC.
We are all volunteers. We have no paid staff. We maintain radio equipment that covers the region, state, and even the world, including HF, VHF, UHF, microwave, and even satellite systems. We have equipment in hospitals, the State of Alaska Emergency Operations Center, the Anchorage Operations Center, and other important locations. We exercise these resources regularly to be ready for emergencies, and even use them to provide free radio communications support to a host of public events such as the Gold Nugget Triathlon, Walk for Hope, Walk MS: Anchorage, Alaska Run for Women, to name just a few.
We offer radio license prep classes to prospective operators, conduct youth radio camps in the summer, provide "tech" talks, and assist with radio experiments with entities like High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP). We provide the RSOC facility as a meeting and activity site for the Civil Air Patrol’s Lake Hood Cadet Squadron (AK093).
