About Us
Girdwood Fire Rescue provides fire, rescue and emergency medicine services for Girdwood and Turnagain Arm. A significant portion of our responses are outside of our fire service area, so all of the funding for equipment and training for mud rescue, water rescue and motor vehicle extrication is fundraised thru donations and grants. We respond to the Seward highway safety corridor from Bird Creek to M60 of the Seward Highway. Avalanches, rockfall and severe weather can impact our 45-80 minute transport time to the nearest hospitals in Anchorage. Women make up 30% of our firefighters, one of the higher ratios in Alaska and the US. The majority of our workforce are paid on call members who volunteer to serve the community.
