About Us
AMIPA's mission is to collect, preserve, catalog and provide public access to Alaskan sound recordings and moving image materials (i.e., motion picture film and video recordings); to provide knowledge and assistance to other archives, private collectors, producers, institutions, and the general public; to advocate on behalf of these materials; and to educate the public, government officials and civic leaders on the importance of preserving Alaska's sound and moving image heritage.

How Pick.Click.Give. makes a difference
With the support of the Alaska State Legislature, the University of Alaska, and Alaskans such as yourself, the Alaska Moving Image Preservation Association (AMIPA) is in a more sustainable position than ever before. However, grant funding and private donations continue to play a critical role in the preservation of Alaska’s unique audiovisual heritage.

Operating an audiovisual archive means not only preserving the films, video recordings, and audio recordings themselves—but also maintaining what is—in effect—a working museum of production and broadcast technology, so that archival audiovisual media can be played back and transferred to new preservation formats. This means working with aging, legacy equipment that may—very unexpectedly—require repair or maintenance. It also means acquiring legacy equipment from the used market—as back-up units for those in currently in use (and/or as sources for increasingly rare spare parts), or to fill a gap in the long list of legacy formats that AMIPA needs to be able to address in order to fulfill the organization's mission. Opportunities to acquire relatively rare, legacy professional equipment off the used market generally come up quite suddenly—via eBay or Craigslist—and the marketplace for these items can be very competitive.

Private donations like those received through Pick.Click.Give. make it possible for AMIPA to take advantage of these, and other important, unforeseeable needs and opportunities when they occur—from the acquisition of legacy equipment, to management of maintenance and repair issues when they come up, to addressing ad hoc, preservation problems that can arise when a new media collection is received, that may have immediate, unbudgeted conservation needs, to—occasionally—purchasing an historic Alaskan media collection, when purchase is the only route to bringing it in to a publicly accessible preservation program, like AMIPA.
