NAMI Anchorage

NAMI Anchorage provides support, education, and advocacy to individuals with mental illness, their families and friends, and the community.

Your donation enables NAMI Anchorage to empower individuals with mental illness, and their families, to work toward recovery. Specifically, contributions will be used to provide activities, programs, and events at no cost to individuals experiencing mental illness, their families and friends, and the larger community.

Our activities are facilitated by people who are, themselves, recovering from the effects of mental illness. We hold regular support groups for individuals who are living with mental illness, their families and their friends. We hold a free Family-to-Family 12-week class twice a year and give presentations throughout the community. NAMI Anchorage also educates the community about mental illness, spreads the word about the possibility of recovery and combats the scourge of stigma.

Your Pick.Click.Give donation directly helps the lives of people like a woman we call “Ann.” Ann was once a college student on a full scholarship to study math, only to do be struck down with schizophrenia before she was able to finish her degree. Ann tried to persevere and began a working life. As time went on, however, her symptoms worsened. She became a consistent target for ostracism, ridicule, and negativity at her workplace. Her stressful work life was making her conditions worse, and she began to lose hope.

Ann found NAMI about ten years ago. She began attending our peer support groups and education events. For the first time in what seemed like a long time, she felt welcome and appreciated instead of ostracized and shunned. She found new life in the new friendships she was able to cultivate at NAMI. Ann began volunteering as a group facilitator. Finally feeling that she was not alone and had support and people who understood her, Ann was able to move forward in her recovery and find new work in a positive place.
