The Caring Paws Fund is a public nonprofit charity based in Alaska's Matanuska-Susitna Borough. We work with pet owners who are in need of financial aid so they can provide their pets with the veterinary care they need. With the help of the valley community, we aim to prevent suffering and keep families together.
How Pick.Click.Give. makes a difference
We are a nonprofit organization that helps distribute funds donated by generous community members to the most deserving families. By cooperating with veterinary professionals, we ensure that the contributions of our donors make a difference in a pet's life.
It all started when...
A few years ago, a dog named Bear was presented to Far Country Animal Hospital by Alaska State Troopers for emergency care. He had sustained very serious injuries to his face while protecting his owner. Word spread to the community about the dog who had put his life in danger to save his owner's life, and soon, donations had been received to cover all of Bear's medical costs. Inspired by the amount of public support Bear received, we began work on setting up the Caring Paws Fund.
In 2008 while driving down the highway, Stephen watched a young Labrador mix narrowly miss being hit by a Semi. He quickly pulled to the side of the road, opened the door and asked the dog if she wanted a ride. Surprisingly, the dog hopped right in. After taking her to a local vet clinic to scan her for a microchip, an active attempt was made to contact the dog’s registered owner. Once all efforts had been exhausted to find the dog’s original owner, Stephen decided to keep Martha and a special friendship was born.
At 6 years old, Martha developed a swollen, cloudy eye that had a discharge. Taken to Far Country Animal Hospital, Martha was diagnosed with glaucoma, an eye disease that if untreated can be quite painful and cause loss of vision. Treatment was started using topical medications but with no improvement, no vision in the eye and a fair amount of pain, surgery to remove the eye was recommended.
Stephen’s stress for the wellbeing of his friend was compounded by the stress of the cost of surgery. It was not going to be possible to come up with any of the necessary funds to provide full treatment for Martha. This is when he was introduced to the Caring Paws Fund.
With the help from the Caring Paws fund, Martha had surgery in 2013. The surgery was a success and Martha is pain free and living a full and active life with her best friend! When asked what would have happened to Martha had Caring Paws not stepped in, Stephen replied “she would have been put down. There was no way I was going to be able to pay for her surgery.”
With your donation, we will be able to assit more pets, provide quaility care and more financial assistance. Please PICK.CLICK.GIVE to Caring Paws!
