Alaska Songbird Institute

About Us

The Alaska Songbird Institute (ASI)'s mission is to conserve Alaska's boreal birds through ecological education & research. We are based at Creamer's Field, in the
heart of Fairbanks where we have been monitoring spring and fall migration for over three decades. We believe that science and conservation are everyone’s responsibility, and so we use a unique model of community-based research, relying on the hard work and passion of our volunteers and students to collect our data. These hands on experiences with wild birds and science can both inform and inspire, and together we are compiling one of Alaska’s only long-term datasets on boreal songbirds. This information helps us observe changes in wild bird populations and health over time and is essential to building successful conservation plans. We also believe in mentoring Alaska’s next generation of leaders in science, education, industry, and conservation, and so our work integrates K-12 field trips, youth mentoring, high school internships, and apprenticeships. We offer a diversity of other community education and citizen science programs throughout the year as well.

How Pick.Click.Give. makes a difference

Nearly three BILLION North American birds have disappeared since 1970. That’s a huge loss, in less than one average lifetime. Alaska’s birds need our help, and sustaining a community conservation legacy like the Alaska Songbird Institute's Creamer’s Field Migration Station is more important than ever. Your donation will ensure we can continue to track the long-term health of Alaska’s boreal birds right here at in Fairbanks, the heart of Alaska's boreal forest. Our data is used to help agencies and landowners make
responsible land use and conservation decisions. At the same time, people of all generations, from all walks of life, build strong connections to Alaska’s wild creatures and spaces through its integrated science education programs. In the end, we will conserve only what we understand and care for! Thank you for helping to conserve Alaska's birds!
