Friends of Pets

Friends of Pets provides vital animal welfare and protective services
for abandoned animals, with respect, compassion and integrity.
We intervene to reduce the euthanasia rates at the Anchorage Animal Care & Control Center, to promote responsible pet ownership
and to improve the quality of life for companion animals.
Our vision is to make our community a place where all companion animals are loved, wanted and protected.

Friends of Pets is an Anchorage based non-profit operated by volunteers. Funds raised go directly to support programs addressing prevention, education or intervention opportunities. We exist to support the efforts of Anchorage Animal Care and Control; reducing the numbers of abandoned animals coming into the Center through our spay and neuter assistance program available to any resident of the Municipality of Anchorage, and reducing the numbers euthanized through our rescue and adoption program. Spay/neuter assistance is also provided for specified animals at the Animal Control Center. We rescue upon request of Center staff dogs or cats in need of additional health or behavioral support, address the issue, and then find well matched lifetime homes. Funds raised assist with medical interventions needed to help dogs and cats reach a baseline of health.
In addition we provide humane education to enhance community demonstration of responsible pet ownership. We provide emergency assistance to pet owners in need of such things as pet food, supplies and medical care. We provide education through our website, newsletter, Facebook and events. Friends of Pets also partners with the AWAIC shelter to provide housing for pets belonging to women seeking to escape domestic violence. We also partner with Providence Hospital to care for pets belonging to patients without social support during times of hospitalization.
