ANCHORAGE, Jan. 5, 2012 – The annual Pick. Click. Give. campaign is underway. In the first 100 hours of 2012, the program saw over $275,000 in pledges from Alaskans across the state. According to the Permanent Fund Dividend Division, as of 6 a.m. this morning there were 5,319 pledged gifts from 3,387 people whose average pledge equaled $82 per donor.

At this rate, if the same number of people file online in 2012 as did in 2011, the program is on track to generate $1.99 million for the over 400 charitable causes on the Pick. Click. Give. list.

“These first days’ numbers suggest there is reason for optimism that we may reach this year’s goal of $2 million for the state’s nonprofit sector through Pick. Click. Give.,” said Jordan Marshall, manager of initiatives and special projects for Rasmuson Foundation.

“Alaskans are stepping up and making a difference in their communities through charitable giving,” said Marshall. “And the experience of giving is improved thanks to numerous updates made to the online PFD application.”

Improvements to the Pick. Click. Give. user interface include a more intuitive search feature, quicker response time, and easier to understand instructions, Marshall noted.

“As the administrator of the program, we were able to completely rewrite the online application this year with the goal of making giving even easier,” said Deborah Bitney, director of the Permanent Fund Dividend Division.

ANCHORAGE, Dec. 27, 2011 Project leaders behind the popular Alaska charitable effort known as Pick. Click. Give. hope to make 2012 the biggest year yet for Alaska nonprofits in the program.

With the January 1 opening of the filing period for Permanent Fund Dividends fast approaching, a statewide Pick. Click. Give. public awareness campaign is now in full swing. Program managers spent much of 2011 conducting market research and other behind-the-scenes planning to make 2012 the most successful yet for the statewide philanthropy initiative. Pick. Click. Give. allows Alaskans to make charitable contributions to one or more of over 400 eligible nonprofit organizations when they file online for the annual dividend.

In research conducted in October, program managers learned that 41 percent of Alaskans surveyed had never heard of Pick. Click. Give. “There’s still plenty of room for Pick. Click. Give. to grow, despite a broad-based marketing effort over the last few years,” said Jordan Marshall, manager of initiatives and special projects for Rasmuson Foundation.

For 2012, Pick. Click. Give. program managers set an aggressive goal of raising at least $2 million for Alaska nonprofits with an increase in individual participation of 5,000 people for a total of 23,800. In 2011, the program raised $1,570,900. The monetary goal for 2012 would represent an increase of 27 percent.

The research also led Pick. Click. Give. managers to a new marketing approach for the program. The survey revealed a gap between what respondents said were their top picks for charitable giving and what donors actually did.

When Alaskans were asked where they would donate $500 if given a choice, respondents cited organizations like the Red Cross, Salvation Army, the Food Bank of Alaska, United Way and the Boys and Girls Club among their top choices. This led Pick. Click. Give. program managers to heavily emphasize three categories of nonprofit services in 2012 program marketing: services for children; emergency response and domestic-violence shelters; and organizations serving the hungry and homeless.

Comparing these responses to actual donor behavior, however, revealed not only an inconsistency but an opportunity: public media and animal-welfare organizations were among the top recipients in 2011, although they were not the first organizations that came to mind when survey participants were asked.

“That’s when the light bulb moment happened,” Marshall said. “Knowing that half of Pick. Click. Give. donors give to more than one organization once they start making selections, we realized marketing the three categories could potentially reach new donors and still benefit the full breadth of nonprofit causes.”

Perhaps most important to reaching the 2012 goal is understanding the potential impact of increased participation. “Participation rates doubled from the first to the second year, and doubled again in the third year,” said Marshall, citing the program’s steady climb to 3.7 percent in 2011. “Over 10 percent of Alaskans say they may utilize Pick. Click. Give. as a way to support the nonprofit causes they care about. There is reason to believe that research-driven messaging and strategic outreach may reach new audiences and get PCG closer to 10 percent participation over time.”

The program was created by the Alaska State Legislature in 2008 and allows Alaskans filing for their PFD online to donate all or part of it to the campuses of the University of Alaska, community foundations, and eligible charitable and educational organizations. After a three-year pilot project, Pick. Click. Give. is now a permanent part of the PFD program. Rasmuson Foundation and several other funding partners committed to an additional five-year marketing effort to make sure Pick. Click. Give. is firmly established and widely known among Alaskans. This year, they will collectively spend $250,000 promoting Pick. Click. Give.

ANCHORAGE, AK — November 28, 2011 – Alaskans are inspired to support important nonprofit programs through the annual Pick.Click.Give. program, and on Friday a group of artists will open an exhibit to share about nonprofit causes that inspire them. The #art4pcg show opens Friday, Dec. 2 at Kaladi Brothers Café in downtown Anchorage.

For the First Friday exhibit, twelve artists selected a cause-type to explore through their work to bring awareness to Pick.Click.Give. and the importance of charitable giving. The works on display will portray the artists’ views of health care, elderly services, libraries, animal rescue, education and other nonprofit causes.

The Alaska Tweets community has also been invited to this First Friday event. Two of artists selected for the First Friday exhibit are also active on Twitter: photographer Valette Keller (@valette) and painter Karen Whitworth (@karenwhitworth). If you attend this First Friday tweetup, the hashtag is #art4pcg.

ANCHORAGE, AK – October 10, 2011. The Department of Revenue this week released figures showing the lion’s share of charitable cash contributions made from Alaskans’ 2011 Permanent Fund Dividends through Pick. Click. Give. Top recipients include charities focused on hunger, homelessness, and Alaskans in emergency situations.

“Alaskans spoke with their dividend this year,” said Jordan Marshall, special projects manager with Rasmuson Foundation, one of the supporters of Pick. Click. Give. “The greatest number of gifts were directed toward Alaskans who are struggling to make ends meet or who have been touched by some misfortune. Alaskans also clearly care about their pets.”

The list of organizations and the amount they received in the first distribution for 2011 is available below or through “Quick Links” on the home page. A searchable list of organizations that qualified for the 2012 program also is available here.

“We are grateful to everyone who gave,” said Marshall, “and we thank them for their generous donations and support of Pick. Click. Give.”

Close to 19,000 Alaskans gave $1.5 million this year, the third year of the program. That compares to a little over 5,000 people giving $545,000 in 2009, and 9,500 people giving $927,000 last year.

A check and list of donors will be mailed to each organization before the end of this month.

These totals represent the majority of donations made to specific organizations. Another distribution later this year is scheduled to include a small number of contributions made by applicants whose individual dividend amount has not yet been finalized.

ANCHORAGE, AK – September 20, 2011. The Department of Revenue has released the list of Alaska organizations that will participate in the 2012 Pick. Click. Give. charitable contributions program. Over 400 nonprofit organizations, community foundations, and campuses of the University of Alaska were approved for the 2012 program. The nonprofits are dedicated to a wide variety of causes. People can search for organizations they want to support by name, location, or type of program.

Every Alaskan who files online for the Permanent Fund Dividend has the option to share part or all of their dividend with causes they care about. 2012 marks the fourth year of the program.

Governor Sean Parnell announced today that Alaska residents who are eligible for the 2011 PFD will receive $1,174. Pledge data at the close of the filing period on March 31, 2011 showed that 18,726 Alaskans made 27,829 charitable gifts to Alaska nonprofits during the 90-day campaign. The total pledged amount on that date was $1,570,900.
