Second chance to donate begins April 5

ANCHORAGE – Good news for Alaska’s nonprofits: The Pick. Click. Give. program saw a 65 percent increase in the number of pledged donations, and over $815,000 was pledged[1] to support qualifying nonprofit organizations, community foundations or campuses of the University of Alaska participating in the program.

Total pledges made to each organization are detailed on the attached spreadsheet.

“Many Alaskans will receive much needed assistance, thanks to their neighbors around the state who used this way to give,” said Jordan Marshall, Initiatives & Special Projects Manager at Rasmuson Foundation. “Together, we are going to have an impact on the lives of people in every corner of Alaska who need this support.”

As of the March 31, 2010 Permanent Fund Dividend (PFD) filing deadline, 8,664 Alaskans made a total of 12,739 pledges through Pick. Click. Give. That’s up from 5,173 donors and 7,698 pledges in 2009, the first year of the program.

These numbers aren’t final though. The Alaska Department of Revenue has established a second chance process for those who still want to Pick. Click. Give. in 2010. Anyone who filed for the 2010 PFD online can go to www.pfd.state.ak.us and amend their donation. Between

April 5 and May 31, every Alaskan who successfully filed an online PFD application will have a second chance to make Pick.Click.Give donations. This option is available to anyone who tried unsuccessfully to donate, would like to make additional donations, or would like to make new donations. Your original online application date and confirmation number are not affected by using this opportunity

Information on the PFD Charitable Contributions Program can be found at www.PickClickGive.org. Alaskans also can join the campaign on social networks including Facebook and Twitter, and learn more on the blog at www.PickClickGive.org/blog.

Note: These figures are subject to change. Actual donations to individual organizations do not become final until PFD checks are distributed in October.

The 2010 Permanent Fund Dividend (PFD) filing period is less than half over and already the number of people donating through the Pick. Click. Give. Charitable Contributions Program has surpassed the 2009 level. As of this week, 5,325 Alaskans have chosen to donate part of their PFD to a favorite charitable organization. So far, 348,010 applications have been filed online, and Alaskans still have until March 31, 2010 to apply.

The rate at which Alaskans are making contributions through Pick. Click. Give has nearly doubled over last year. Excluding the first three days of the filing period when technical difficulties prevented most filers from using the online contributions tool, nearly two percent of filers are directing some of their PFD to a cause of their choice, and about half of those are choosing to support more than one organization. Last year one percent of filers participated in the program.

The Alaska Department of Revenue is expected in the coming days to announce a solution for people who experienced technical problems with Pick. Click. Give. that allows them to go back and make a donation. All Alaskans who have previously filed will be able to amend their PFD application to add a Pick. Click. Give. donation if they did not already do so.

Information on the PFD Charitable Contributions Program can be found at www.PickClickGive.org. Alaskans also can join the campaign on social networks including Facebook and Twitter, and learn more on the blog at www.PickClickGive.org/blog.

After several days of successful filings, organizers of Pick. Click. Give. say the system is fixed and Alaskans should feel confident that they can now make contributions to their favorite charitable organizations through the Permanent Fund Dividend (PFD) Charitable Contributions Program.

“Pick. Click. Give. is working as intended,” said Cassandra Stalzer, communications manager at Rasmuson Foundation. “Alaskans are back online making their donations without difficulty.”

Stalzer pointed out that at the current rate of participation, Pick. Click. Give. is on track to experience an increase in the donation rate of the 2009 program by 60 percent. She said that about half of those who have filed are choosing to support more than one organization.

As of this morning, Stalzer said, close to 125,000 people had applied online for their Permanent Fund Dividend (PFD) and approximately 1,000 made donations through Pick. Click. Give. During the three days since the technical problems were resolved, the rate of participation has been approximately 1.6 percent each day. In 2009, 1 percent of Alaskans who filed online for their PFD made donations through Pick. Click. Give.

“We’re very pleased with the increased rate of giving,” Stalzer said. “It shows us that Alaskans do care about helping people in need and that they are willing to come back to Pick. Click. Give. to do that.”

Stalzer said the PFD Division of the Department of Revenue responded quickly when it became apparent during the first day of filing that a problem existed in the Pick. Click. Give. system. She emphasized that the division is continuing efforts to create a process that allows Alaskans to make a contribution through Pick. Click. Give. even if they already submitted their online application. Details on the process for donating will be announced as soon as they are finalized.

CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTIONS PROGRAM RAISES $550,000 Donation checks are arriving for the Legislature’s new “Pick. Click. Give.” campaign, and the results are in. More than 5,500 Alaskans pledged a total of about $550,000 from their 2008 Alaska Permanent Fund dividends through the online Charitable Contributions Program.

It couldn’t have arrived at a better time, said Laurie Wolf of The Foraker Group, a nonprofit which supports other nonprofits throughout the state and helped coordinate the campaign.

“Because of the economic downturn, donations to many nonprofits have declined at the very time when demand for their services is up,” she said. “Many Alaska families are struggling to make ends meet and are reaching out to nonprofits and charitable organizations for assistance.”

CHARITIES HOPE PFD GIFTS EXCEED COSTS

The new Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend donation program called “Pick. Click. Give.” raised $550,000 this year, but is expected to cost about $900,000 to administer during the program’s first three years.

The program, the result of legislation sponsored by Rep. Bill Thomas, R-Haines, in 2008 has already paid for hundreds of groups around the state, including a couple dozen in Juneau.

The program allows Alaskans to devote part of their permanent fund dividends to causes around the state was made possible by the Rasmuson Foundation, the state’s largest charitable foundation, by pledging to pick up the administrative costs of the program for the first three years.
